Corgi is one of the most recognizable names in the world of die-cast scale models, specializing in accurately detailed miniature vehicles. The brand was originally launched in the United Kingdom in 1956 by Mettoy Playcraft Ltd. The name was chosen to reflect the brand's Welsh heritage, as the factory was located in Swansea, Wales.

Historically, Corgi models were manufactured in the UK; however, following various corporate shifts and the evolution of the global toy industry, production transitioned to other regions. Today, while design and engineering often remain focused in the UK, the actual manufacturing of the products primarily takes place in China to leverage specialized die-casting facilities.

Over the decades, ownership of the Corgi brand has changed hands several times. After a period of independence and a management buyout from the Mattel group in the late 1990s, the brand was eventually acquired by Hornby Hobbies in 2008. As of 2024 and beyond, Corgi remains a core pillar of the Hornby Hobbies portfolio, maintaining its status as a premium brand for collectors and toy enthusiasts worldwide.
