PlayStation is a world-renowned brand representing a series of video game consoles and media services. Originally conceived by Ken Kutaragi and developed by Sony's hardware division, the brand was launched in 1994, fundamentally changing the landscape of the gaming industry. It has since evolved through multiple generations, including the PlayStation 5, and includes handheld units and online services.
While the brand is deeply rooted in Japanese engineering and design, the mass production of the hardware primarily takes place in China and other parts of Southeast Asia to meet global demand. Despite the international manufacturing footprint, all creative direction, hardware engineering, and brand strategy remain centralized in the headquarters of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The brand is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Sony Group Corporation. Through various mergers, the management of PlayStation moved from Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) to the current Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), which is headquartered in San Mateo, California, while maintaining its primary corporate identity under the Japanese parent company.
