Lonely Planet Brand Overview

Lonely Planet is one of the world's most successful travel media brands, founded in 1973 by Maureen and Tony Wheeler. The brand's journey began after the couple's overland trip through Asia, leading to their first guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Since its inception, the brand has grown into a global authority on travel, publishing hundreds of guidebooks across numerous languages.

Manufacturing and Production

While the editorial content of Lonely Planet guides is created by a global network of writers and researchers, the physical manufacturing of the books occurs in multiple countries. Depending on the intended market (e.g., USA, UK, or Asia), printing is often outsourced to large-scale commercial printers in China, Singapore, or Italy to optimize logistics and costs.

Ownership Evolution

Originally an independent company founded in Australia, Lonely Planet has seen several changes in ownership. In 2007, the British broadcaster BBC Worldwide acquired a majority stake, eventually taking full control in 2011. In 2013, it was sold to NC2 Media, a company based in Nashville, USA. Most recently, in late 2020, Red Ventures—a major American media company—acquired Lonely Planet, integrating it into its portfolio of digital brands to modernize its presence in the travel industry.
