Unicum is a legendary Hungarian herbal liqueur or bitters, served as a digestif and apéritif. The liqueur is produced today by Zwack according to a secret formula of more than forty herbs; the drink is aged in oak casks. During the Communist era in Hungary, the Zwack family lived in exile in New York and Italy, while a different recipe of Unicum was produced in Hungary. Before moving back to Hungary, Péter Zwack produced Unicum in Italy based on the original family recipe. After the fall of communism, Péter Zwack returned to Hungary and resumed production with the original formula.
The iconic round bottle with a golden cross on a red background remains a symbol of Hungarian national identity and tradition. While the brand is family-controlled, Diageo has previously held distribution rights and investment interests, helping the brand reach a global market.
