MarineTraffic is a world-leading provider of ship tracking and maritime intelligence. It was founded in 2007 by Dimitris Lekkas as a community-driven project to promote transparency and efficiency in the shipping industry. The platform utilizes Automatic Identification System (AIS) technology to map vessel positions, coastal weather, and port congestion in real-time. Over the years, it evolved from a research-based hobby into a vital commercial tool used by shipping professionals, researchers, and global agencies.

In February 2023, MarineTraffic was acquired by Kpler, a major data and analytics firm for commodity markets. This acquisition combined MarineTraffic's extensive AIS network with Kpler's satellite data and commodity tracking capabilities to create a comprehensive maritime data ecosystem. While the service was birthed in Greece and maintains a significant operational presence there, it now operates as part of a global data suite under French leadership.
