Alpro is a pioneering brand in the plant-based food industry, originally founded in Belgium in 1980. The company was established by Vandemoortele as a way to create sustainable and healthy alternatives to traditional dairy products using soy. Over the decades, Alpro expanded its portfolio to include a wide range of ingredients like almond, coconut, and oat, becoming a leader in the European market.
In 2017, Alpro became part of the Danone group after Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods. This acquisition integrated Alpro into Danone's Essential Dairy and Plant-Based (EDP) division. Today, Alpro products are produced in several high-tech facilities across Europe, primarily in Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom, to meet the growing international demand for vegan-friendly yogurt and milk substitutes. The brand remains headquartered in Ghent, Belgium, while operating under the global management of Danone, which is based in France.
