Milka is one of the world's most recognizable chocolate brands, famous for its distinct lilac packaging and the 'Milka Cow.' The brand originated in Switzerland in 1901, created by Philippe Suchard, who had opened his first confectionery in Neuchâtel decades earlier. The name Milka is a portmanteau of the German words for its primary ingredients: Milch (milk) and Kakao (cocoa).
While the brand has Swiss heritage and is widely associated with Alpine milk, it is no longer produced solely in Switzerland. Today, Milka is manufactured in multiple European locations to meet global demand, with major production facilities in Lörrach (Germany), Bludenz (Austria), and Svoboda (Ukraine). The raw materials, particularly the milk, are sourced from the Alpine regions to maintain the brand’s signature creamy texture.
Ownership of the brand has transitioned through several major corporate mergers. Originally under Suchard, it became part of Interfood, then Jacobs Suchard, and was eventually acquired by Kraft Foods. In 2012, Kraft Foods split into two companies, and Milka became a primary brand under Mondelēz International. Mondelēz remains the ultimate owner today, overseeing the brand's global distribution and vast variety of chocolate-based products.
