Dynabook is a brand with a prestigious technological pedigree, having originated from the laptop division of the Japanese multinational conglomerate Toshiba. For over three decades, the business operated under the Toshiba name, establishing many industry milestones including the launch of the T1100 in 1985, which is widely recognized as the world's first mass-market commercial laptop. In the Japanese market, the 'Dynabook' name has been used for notebook products since 1989, inspired by computer scientist Alan Kay's vision of a portable educational device for children.
The modern era of the brand began in 2018 when Sharp Corporation, a subsidiary of the Taiwan-based Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd.), acquired a majority stake in Toshiba's PC business. This unit was subsequently rebranded worldwide as Dynabook Inc. in 2019. By August 2020, Sharp exercised a call option to acquire the remaining shares, making Dynabook a wholly owned subsidiary of Sharp. While the brand's engineering and design heritage remain deeply rooted in Japan, its manufacturing footprint is now part of the extensive global supply chain of Foxconn, with primary assembly facilities based in China.
