Dynabook is a premium computing brand with a legacy spanning over three decades, originally established as the laptop division of the Japanese multinational Toshiba. The brand's identity is rooted in the 1989 launch of the DynaBook J-3100 in Japan, a pioneering device that helped define the modern laptop form factor. For years, Toshiba was a dominant force in the global PC market under this banner, known for engineering breakthroughs such as the first integrated CD-ROM and color TFT displays in mobile computers.
In a major industrial shift between 2018 and 2020, Sharp Corporation acquired Toshiba's personal computer business in its entirety. This transition led to the formal rebranding of the division as Dynabook Inc. Today, the brand operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sharp, which itself is majority-owned by the Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd.). This ownership structure combines Japanese precision engineering and R&D with Foxconn's massive global manufacturing scale.
While Dynabook maintains its corporate headquarters and primary research centers in Tokyo, Japan, its manufacturing footprint is global. Production primarily takes place in Foxconn-affiliated facilities across China and Taiwan, as well as specialized assembly plants in Japan. This allows the brand to maintain strict quality control while leverages a high-efficiency supply chain for its business-focused Portégé, Tecra, and Satellite Pro product lines.
