BMW, an abbreviation for Bayerische Motoren Werke, is one of the world's most recognized luxury automotive brands. Founded in 1916 in Munich, Germany, it originally started as a manufacturer of aircraft engines before transitioning to motorcycles and eventually passenger vehicles. Today, the brand is synonymous with high-performance engineering and premium craftsmanship.

While its global headquarters and primary design centers remain in Germany, BMW has a massive global manufacturing footprint. It operates major production facilities in Germany (Munich, Dingolfing, Regensburg, and Leipzig), but also maintains significant plants in the United States (Spartanburg), Mexico, China, South Africa, and several other assembly locations worldwide to serve regional markets.

Ownership of the brand remains largely controlled by the descendants of Herbert Quandt, who saved the company from bankruptcy in the 1950s. The Quandt family (Stefan Quandt and Susanne Klatten) holds a significant minority stake that effectively grants them long-term control, while the remaining shares are publicly traded. The BMW Group also owns other prestigious brands, including MINI and Rolls-Royce.
