Coors was founded in 1873 by German immigrant Adolph Coors in Golden, Colorado, where he established a brewery that would eventually become the largest single-site brewery in the world. For over a century, the brand was famous for being primarily available in the Western United States, gaining a cult-like status that was famously spotlighted in the film Smokey and the Bandit. In 1986, it finally achieved nationwide distribution across the U.S.

Today, Coors is a flagship brand of the Molson Coors Beverage Company, which was formed following a 'merger of equals' in 2005 between the Canadian Molson Brewery and the American Adolph Coors Company. In 2016, Molson Coors became the sole owner of the MillerCoors joint venture, further consolidating its position as one of the world's largest brewing companies.

Manufacturing for Coors products occurs at various locations across North America and Europe. While the historic Golden, Colorado site remains the home of the original Coors Banquet and is a major hub for Coors Light, the brand is also produced in several other regional breweries throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom to satisfy global demand.
