Windex is one of the most iconic household cleaning brands in North America, specifically famous for its blue glass cleaner formula. It was originally developed in 1933 by the Drackett Company, which was based in Cincinnati, Ohio. During its early years, it was marketed as a high-solvent product for cleaning windows without streaks, and its popularity grew rapidly because of its ease of use compared to traditional soap and water methods.

Today, Windex is manufactured primarily in the United States, with a major production hub in Racine, Wisconsin. The brand has expanded significantly from its original glass cleaner to include multi-surface sprays, wipes, and specialized formulas for vinegar-based cleaning or outdoor use. The product is also bottled and distributed in various international markets to meet regional demand.

Ownership of the brand transitioned from the Drackett Company to Bristol-Myers (which later became Bristol-Myers Squibb) in 1965. In 1992, S.C. Johnson & Son acquired Drackett from Bristol-Myers Squibb, bringing Windex into its portfolio of household brands alongside Pledge and Shout. S.C. Johnson remains the ultimate owner and is a privately held, multi-generational family company headquartered in the United States.
