Lotus Biscoff, originally known as Speculoos, has a rich history dating back to 1932 in Lembeke, Belgium. Founded by the Boone family, the unique caramelised biscuit was traditionally served alongside coffee in Belgian cafes and hotels. The name 'Biscoff' is a portmanteau of 'Biscuit' and 'Coffee', reflecting its primary consumption pairing.
While the brand has achieved global fame, the heart of its production remains in Belgium. However, to meet rising international demand, especially in the North American and Asian markets, the company has expanded its manufacturing footprint. This includes a major production facility in Mebane, North Carolina, and most recently, a new factory in Thailand to serve the Asia-Pacific region.
The brand remains under the control of Lotus Bakeries, which is still largely owned by the Boone family. It has transformed from a local Belgian bakery into a multinational food giant, listed on Euronext Brussels, and continues to be the definitive global ambassador for the traditional speculoos flavor profile.
