Motorola is a pioneer in the telecommunications industry, having invented the first portable handheld mobile phone in the 1970s. The brand originated in Chicago, Illinois, and became a global household name for consumer electronics and mission-critical communications equipment. Over the decades, the company evolved and eventually underwent a major split into two independent entities, Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility, focusing on different sectors of the tech market.

Today, the consumer-facing brand known for smartphones and personal wearable technology is Motorola Mobility. While the brand carries a strong American heritage, its manufacturing processes are largely concentrated in China, utilizing modern high-tech facilities to meet global demand. Some local production also occurs in regions like Brazil and India to serve specific regional markets.

In terms of ownership, Motorola Mobility was acquired by Google in 2012 before being sold to Lenovo Group Ltd. in 2014. As of 2024 and looking toward the future, the company remains a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lenovo, headquartered in Hong Kong and Beijing. This arrangement allows Motorola to maintain its design roots in Chicago while benefiting from the massive supply chain and global corporate infrastructure of its parent company, Lenovo.
