Merrild is a quintessential Danish coffee brand founded in 1964 by Møller Merrild in Esbjerg, Denmark. Originally starting as a local coffee shop where the founder experimented with roasting and blending beans in a basement, the brand grew to become a household staple in Denmark, famously known for its blend numbers and distinctive packaging.
Over the decades, ownership shifted from the founder to major international conglomerates, including Sara Lee and later D.E. Master Blenders (now part of JDE Peet's). In 2015, following a merger between Mondelez and D.E. Master Blenders, European competition authorities mandated the divestment of the Merrild brand. It was subsequently acquired by the Italian coffee giant Luigi Lavazza S.p.A. Today, Merrild remains a leader in the Danish market, combining its Nordic heritage with the global expertise of its Italian parent company.
