The brand was founded in 1997 in Domancy, France, by a team from the multinational retailer Decathlon. It was named after the Quechua people of the Andes to reflect resilience and adaptation to mountain environments.

While the brand's design and research center is strategically located at the foot of Mont Blanc in the French Alps to test products in real alpine conditions, the manufacturing is decentralized. Products are primarily manufactured in countries like Vietnam, China, Bangladesh, and India to maintain competitive pricing.

Decathlon remains the ultimate owner and distributor of the Quechua brand. As a vertically integrated company, Decathlon manages the entire lifecycle of the product, from initial design in France to global retail through its own network of stores and online platforms.
