Rama is a historic brand of margarine and other food spreads that has been a household name in Europe and Africa for decades. Originally launched in Germany in 1924, it became a cornerstone of the Unilever food portfolio. The brand is known for its smooth texture and buttery taste, often marketed as a healthier or more plant-based alternative to traditional butter.
In 2018, Unilever sold its entire global spreads business, including the Rama brand, to KKR (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts). This led to the formation of Upfield, which is now the world's leading producer of plant-based spreads and cheeses. Today, Rama is manufactured in various facilities across Europe, including Germany and Poland, to serve regional markets.
Under Upfield's ownership, the brand has shifted its focus toward natural ingredients and sustainable practices, such as removing palm oil from many of its recipe variations, as seen in the 'Buttery' 100% natural ingredients version featured in the image. Upfield continues to manage the brand's global presence from its headquarters in the Netherlands.
