Marabou is a beloved Scandinavian chocolate brand with deep roots in Sweden. Founded in 1916 by Norwegian chocolatier Johan Throne Holst, the brand was named after the marabou stork, which was the mascot for his first chocolate factory, Freia, in Norway. Over the decades, Marabou has become an iconic household name across the Nordic region, particularly famous for its signature milk chocolate recipe.
While the brand was originally independent, it was acquired by the multinational food conglomerate Mondelez International (formerly Kraft Foods) in 1993. Most of the chocolate production still takes place at the historic factory in Upplands Väsby, Sweden, although some manufacturing has been shifted to other European facilities like those in Lithuania to meet demand. Today, Marabou remains a key player in the global confectionery portfolio of Mondelez, retaining its Swedish heritage while benefiting from an international distribution network.
