Freia is one of Norway's most iconic and beloved chocolate brands, established in 1889 by Johan Throne Holst. It has been a cornerstone of Norwegian culture for over a century, particularly famous for its factory in Rodeløkka, Oslo, where most of its core chocolate products remain in production today. The Freia Premium line, featuring high cocoa percentages like this 86% Kakao variant, is part of their dark chocolate collection aimed at sophisticated palates.
While Freia remains deeply rooted in Norwegian heritage, the company underwent a major ownership shift in late 20th century. It was first acquired by the Scandinavian company Marabou in 1990 (becoming Freia Marabou), which was subsequently purchased by Kraft Foods in 1993. Since 2012, as part of the corporate spin-off of Kraft's snack division, Freia has been under the ultimate ownership of Mondelez International. Despite international ownership, the brand maintains its distinct identity and local manufacturing presence in Oslo, continuing to source sustainable cocoa through the 'Cocoa Life' initiative.
