The USB Type-B connector is a standardized hardware interface used primarily for connecting large peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, and external hard drives, to computers. Historically, it was developed by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), a non-profit group founded by technology leaders including Intel, Microsoft, and IBM to create a uniform standard for cables and connectors. Manufacturing of USB Type-B components occurs globally, with the highest concentration of production facilities located in China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, where electronics manufacturing infrastructure is most robust. Because USB is an open industry standard rather than a proprietary consumer brand, no single company owns the 'brand' in a traditional commercial sense. Instead, the technology is licensed and maintained by the USB-IF to ensure interoperability across different manufacturers and devices worldwide. Today, while newer standards like USB-C are becoming more prevalent, the Type-B connector remains a staple in professional and home office equipment due to its durable and secure physical design.
