KitKat is a iconic chocolate-covered wafer bar that was originally created by Rowntree's in York, United Kingdom, in 1935. It was initially launched as 'Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp' before being renamed to Kit Kat in 1937. The brand has since become a global phenomenon, recognized by its classic 'Have a break, have a KitKat' slogan and its distinct four-finger format.
While the brand originated in the UK, it is now produced in various locations worldwide to meet global demand. For the UK and European markets, a significant amount of production still takes place in the original home of York. However, manufacturing facilities also exist in countries such as Japan, Australia, Canada, and various nations across the Middle East and Africa. Note that in the United States, KitKat is produced under license by the Hershey Company, while throughout the rest of the world, it is managed by Nestlé.
Today, KitKat is one of the flagship brands of Nestlé, the world's largest food and beverage company. Following Nestlé's acquisition of Rowntree's in 1988, the brand has expanded into hundreds of unique flavors and limited editions, particularly in the Japanese market where it has achieved cult status. It remains a cornerstone of the global snack industry, known for its commitment to sustainably sourced cocoa through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan.
