Greene King is one of the United Kingdom's oldest and most prestigious brewing and pub retailing companies. Founded in 1799 by Benjamin Greene in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, the brand has been synonymous with traditional British ale for over two centuries. Its flagship brewery, the Westgate Brewery, continues to operate in its original historic location, producing well-known staples such as Greene King IPA and Abbot Ale.
Over the years, the company expanded significantly through acquisitions, including the merger with Frederick King's brewery in 1887 and the later purchase of the Spirit Pub Company. For much of its history, Greene King remained a publicly traded British entity on the London Stock Exchange, growing into a massive estate of managed and leased pubs across the UK.
In late 2019, Greene King was acquired by CK Asset Holdings, a Hong Kong-based conglomerate founded by billionaire Li Ka-shing. This acquisition marked a major shift in ownership from British shareholders to international private investment. Today, while the beer is still brewed in Suffolk and maintain its British heritage, the ultimate corporate oversight and strategic direction reside in Hong Kong under the CK Asset Holdings umbrella.
