Vicks VapoRub is an iconic brand of topical mentholated ointment, originally formulated in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, around 1894 by Lunsford Richardson. His company, Richardson-Vicks Inc., later became one of the most successful pharmaceutical businesses in the world, largely on the strength of this single product. In 1985, the Richardson family sold the company to Procter & Gamble (P&G).
Today, Vicks is a global powerhouse brand under P&G's healthcare division. The manufacturing occurs in multiple locations specialized by region, including major plants in Mexico, India, and Germany, among others. The product remains a staple in home medicine cabinets worldwide for the temporary relief of cough and minor aches associated with the common cold.
