Jolla is a Finnish technology company founded in 2011 by former Nokia employees who were involved in developing the Meego operating system. The brand represents a continuation of open-source mobile development through its proprietary yet Linux-based Sailfish OS. While the original Jolla smartphones were developed in Finland and assembled in China, the company transitioned its primary focus from hardware to software licensing and security solutions.
Over the years, Jolla has undergone significant corporate restructuring. While it started as an independent startup, it later secured funding from various international investors. Most recently, following the geopolitical landscape shifts and internal restructuring, the company has worked to separate itself from previous Russian-linked investments (like Rostelecom) to focus on European sovereign mobile solutions. As of late 2023 and early 2024, the brand operates under a new structure aimed at preserving Finnish and European control over mobile security technology.
