The brand's origin is tied to the American Chicle Company, which was formed through the merger of several gum manufacturers, including those who popularized the use of chicle—a natural latex from sapodilla trees—as a gum base.

Over the decades, the brand has changed hands through various corporate mergers and acquisitions. Historically associated with Adams and later Warner-Lambert, the trademark eventually became part of the Cadbury Schweppes portfolio. Today, Chiclets is owned by Mondelez International, following the spin-off from Kraft Foods in 2012.
