Brand History and Origin

Bautz’ner is one of Germany's most iconic mustard brands, originating from the city of Bautzen in Saxony. Founded in 1953 in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), it quickly became the leading mustard brand in East Germany. It is particularly famous for its 'Mittelscharf' (medium-hot) variety, which has maintained a cult-like following for decades.

Manufacturing and Ownership

Despite the reunification of Germany and various corporate shifts, the product is still proudly manufactured at its traditional production site in Bautzen. In 1992, the brand was acquired by Develey Senf & Feinkost GmbH, a major family-owned condiment producer based in Bavaria. Under Develey's stewardship, Bautz’ner has expanded its product line to include pickles, dressings, and sauces while maintaining its status as the regional market leader in Eastern Germany.
