PlayStation is a world-renowned video game brand produced by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The brand was first introduced in December 1994 in Japan with the launch of the original PlayStation console. It was born out of a failed collaboration between Sony and Nintendo to create a CD-ROM peripheral, leading Sony to develop its own independent hardware that revolutionized the gaming industry with 3D graphics and optical disc storage.
While the brand originated in Japan, modern PlayStation hardware—including the PS5—is primarily manufactured in China through large-scale electronics assemblers like Foxconn and Luxshare Precision. However, Sony still maintains highly automated production facilities in Kisarazu, Japan, for specific components and initial production runs.
Today, PlayStation is the flagship brand of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), a subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation. SIE is headquartered in San Mateo, California, while the parent corporation remains based in Tokyo, Japan. The brand continues to dominate the global gaming market through its hardware, network services (PlayStation Network), and extensive library of exclusive first-party software developed by PlayStation Studios.
