ProdLacta is one of Romania's oldest and most iconic dairy brands, with its roots stretching back to a cooperative established in Brasov in the early 20th century (reorganized in 1948). The brand is synonymous with the Transylvania region, specifically the pastures around the Carpathian Mountains, which is reflected in the product name 'Lapte de la munte' (Milk from the mountain).

Historically a state-owned enterprise during the communist era, the company underwent privatization and eventually a period of financial restructuring. Today, ProdLacta S.A. operates as the primary manufacturer and brand owner. A significant portion of its ownership is held by the JLC Group, a trans-national holding company with major interests in the dairy industry across Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The milk is primarily sourced from local Romanian farmers and processed at their facility in Brasov, maintaining its traditional regional identity despite the broader corporate ownership.
