Costa Coffee is a globally recognized coffeehouse chain with a rich history rooted in London. Founded in 1971 by Italian brothers Sergio and Bruno Costa, the brand initially focused on supplying roasted coffee to caterers and specialist Italian coffee shops before expanding into its own cafes. Over the decades, it grew to become the largest coffeehouse chain in the United Kingdom and one of the largest in the world.
While the brand originated in the UK, its ownership has transitioned through major global corporations. In 1995, it was acquired by Whitbread, which oversaw its massive international expansion. However, in 2019, the brand was sold to The Coca-Cola Company for approximately $4.9 billion. This acquisition integrated Costa Coffee into Coca-Cola's massive global beverage portfolio, aiming to provide a 'total beverage' solution across multiple retail channels.
Regarding high-quality merchandise like the reusable geometric travel tumbler shown here, manufacturing is typically outsourced to specialized facilities, predominantly in China, which handle large-scale production of stainless steel and plastic drinkware. Today, Costa Coffee operates as a subsidiary of the United States-based Coca-Cola Company, maintaining its headquarters in Dunstable, England, while leveraging an international supply chain for its cafes and consumer merchandise.
