The brand originated in Portugal with the opening of the first Continente hypermarket in 1985 in Matosinhos. It is the flagship brand of MC (formerly Sonae MC), a division of the Sonae Group. The product is primarily manufactured in Portugal by local dairy processors through private-label partnerships, ensuring supply chain efficiency and supporting the domestic agricultural sector.

Sonae remains the ultimate owner, standing as one of Portugal's largest multinational business groups with interests in retail, telecommunications, and real estate. The Continente brand is a cornerstone of the Portuguese consumer landscape, managed under the MC subsidiary.
