Arla Havarti is a classic semi-soft Danish cheese known for its creamy texture and mild, buttery flavor. The cheese has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century when it was first developed by Hanne Nielsen at her farm, Havartigård, near Copenhagen. Although it was inspired by German Tilsit cheese, it eventually became a distinct Danish staple. In 2019, the European Union granted Havarti 'Protected Geographical Indication' (PGI) status, meaning that within the EU, cheese labeled as 'Havarti' must be produced in Denmark according to specific traditional standards.

Today, Arla Foods, a massive European dairy cooperative, is the primary producer and distributor of this brand. While much of the Havarti sold in Europe is produced in Denmark, Arla also operates significant manufacturing facilities in North America. For instance, Arla produces Havarti for the American market at its Hollandtown Dairy in Wisconsin, using milk from local US farmers. This global production model allows Arla to maintain its position as one of the world's leading dairy companies while adhering to both traditional Danish recipes and local market requirements.
