Founded in 2010 by Bhavish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati, it began as an online cab aggregator and has since expanded to include various forms of transportation, electric vehicle manufacturing, and financial services. The brand originated in Mumbai and later moved its headquarters to Bengaluru, becoming a dominant player in the Indian ride-hailing market.

While the primary service is delivered through locally based drivers and software infrastructure in the countries where it operates (such as India, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom), the core product—the technology and the brand—is fundamentally Indian. Ola Electric, a subsidiary, also manufactures electric scooters in its massive 'Futurefactory' located in Tamil Nadu, India.

Ownership of Ola remains primarily under its founders and a diverse group of international venture capital investors. As of the current period, ANI Technologies is the ultimate holding company for the ride-sharing business, while Ola Electric has been spun off as its own entity. The company remains headquartered in India, reflecting its roots as one of the country's most successful home-grown technology startups.
