Ursus is one of Romania's most iconic and best-selling beer brands, often referred to as 'The King of Beer in Romania.' The product shown is Ursus Black, a dark lager known for its rich malt profile. While the brand has deep roots in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, dating back to 1878, its modern history is defined by its acquisition by major international brewing conglomerates.
Following its original founding, Ursus became a cornerstone of the Romanian brewing industry. In the mid-1990s, it was acquired by South African Breweries, which eventually became the global giant SABMiller. In 2017, as part of the divestment required for the AB InBev and SABMiller merger, Ursus Breweries—along with several other Central and Eastern European brands—was sold to the Japanese conglomerate Asahi Group Holdings. Today, while it retains its Romanian heritage and is manufactured locally in breweries across Romania (such as those in Buzău, Timișoara, and Brașov), it is part of Asahi's extensive European portfolio.
