Wawa is an iconic American convenience store chain that evolved from a dairy business founded in the late 19th century. Originally founded by George Wood in 1890 as an iron foundry, it transitioned into a dairy processing plant in Wawa, Pennsylvania, by 1902. The first retail convenience store opened in Folsom, Pennsylvania, in 1964 as a way to sell dairy products directly to consumers. Today, it is famous for its privately branded fresh food, coffee, and dairy items.
The company maintains a strong vertically integrated manufacturing process, operating its own dairy processing plant in Pennsylvania that supplies milk and beverage products to its locations across several states. While it has expanded its geographic footprint significantly, its manufacturing and distribution remain concentrated in the Eastern United States to ensure product freshness.
Wawa remains a privately held, family and employee-owned company. The Wood family continues to hold a majority stake, while a significant portion of the company is owned by its associates through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). This ownership structure has allowed Wawa to maintain its unique corporate culture and regional brand loyalty since its inception.
