Sharpie is one of the most iconic brands in the world of writing instruments, best known for its permanent markers. Originally launched in 1964 by the Sanford Ink Company in the United States, it became the first pen-style permanent marker. Over the decades, it has evolved into a global household name, synonymous with permanent ink.
Today, the brand is owned by the American conglomerate Newell Brands. While a significant portion of manufacturing remains in the United States to serve the North American market, Sharpie products are also manufactured in Mexico and China to support international distribution. The ownership structure has shifted through corporate acquisitions, moving from Sanford to Newell Rubbermaid (now Newell Brands) in 1992, which continues to manage the brand's global expansion and product innovation.
