Borsec is one of the most prestigious and historic mineral water brands in Romania, often referred to as 'The Queen of Mineral Waters' (Regina Apelor Minerale), a title originally bestowed by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary. The water is sourced from the Borsec area in the Eastern Carpathian Mountains, known for its therapeutic properties and purity. Its industrial bottling history dates back to 1806 when the first bottling plant was established by Josef Walicsek and Miklós Günther.
Today, the brand is wholly owned and managed by Romaqua Group, the largest domestic beverage producer in Romania. The manufacturing process remains concentrated at the source in Borsec to ensure the natural preservation of its mineral content and carbonation. The ownership is predominantly Romanian-controlled, marking it as a significant national brand that has successfully transitioned through various historical periods, including state ownership during the communist era, into a modern private commercial powerhouse.
