Lucozade is a prominent brand of energy and sports drinks originally created in 1927 by William Owen, a chemist from Newcastle, England. Originally named 'Glucozade', it was initially intended as a source of energy for the sick before being rebranded and marketed as an energy drink for the general public in the 1980s.
The brand underwent a major ownership shift in 2013 when GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) sold its Lucozade and Ribena brands to the Japanese beverage giant Suntory. This move integrated the brand into Suntory Beverage & Food, a division of the Suntory Group.
Today, Lucozade is produced in several locations globally to serve different regional markets. While the primary production facility remains in Coleford, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, it is also manufactured and distributed in various other countries under license or via Suntory subsidiaries. The brand remains a major player in the global functional beverage market.
