Alpro is the leading brand in Europe for plant-based drinks and food products. Originally founded in Belgium in 1980 by Philippe Vandemoortele, the company pioneered the commercialization of soy-based alternatives at a time when dairy-free options were niche. The brand's mission was to offer healthier and more sustainable food choices to the mainstream market.
Over the decades, Alpro underwent several corporate transitions. It was acquired by the American company WhiteWave Foods (a spin-off from Dean Foods) in 2009. In 2017, the global food giant Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods, bringing Alpro under its extensive portfolio of health-conscious dairy and plant-based brands. Today, Alpro continues to operate as a key brand within Danone's plant-based division.
Production of Alpro goods is decentralized to ensure freshness and reduce transport emissions across Europe. The company operates major manufacturing facilities in Wevelgem (Belgium), Issenheim (France), and Kettering (United Kingdom). While the brand core remains Belgian, the products found on shelves are typically produced in whichever of these regional hubs is closest to the point of sale.
