Trident is a world-renowned brand of sugar-free chewing gum, originally introduced in the United States in the early 1960s. The brand gained fame as the first patented sugarless gum, developed by American Chicle in response to a growing medical concern over sugar and dental cavities. Over the decades, it has expanded its product line to include various textures and flavor profiles, such as the 'Senses' range which focuses on long-lasting aromatic experiences.
While the brand has deep American roots, its manufacturing is now global to serve various regional markets. Most Trident products sold in North America were historically produced in locations like Rockford, Illinois, while European and other international versions are manufactured in various facilities across the globe, including Poland and Egypt. Ownership has shifted through several major corporate mergers; it was previously part of the Cadbury Schweppes portfolio before being acquired by Kraft Foods, which eventually spun off its snack food division to create Mondelēz International, the current ultimate owner. As of late 2023 and moving forward into 2026, the European, North American, and Australian portions of the business have been divestment targets for Mondelēz, with different owners like Perfetti Van Melle taking over certain regional operations.
