Lakmé is India's first home-grown cosmetic brand and a household name in the Indian beauty industry. The brand was founded in 1952 at the behest of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who was concerned about Indian women spending precious foreign exchange on luxury cosmetics. It was started as a 100% subsidiary of Tata Oil Mills (TOMCO).
In 1996, Tata sold its stake in Lakmé to Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), which is the Indian subsidiary of the multinational FMCG giant Unilever. Today, Lakmé is a leading brand in the Indian market, known for its extensive range of makeup and skincare products, and it also hosts the prestigious Lakmé Fashion Week. Most Lakmé products are manufactured at various facilities across India, specifically to cater to the local skin types and climatic conditions.
