Holden, originally established as a saddlery business in 1856, grew to become Australia's premier automotive brand. For over a century, the brand was synonymous with Australian manufacturing, particularly known for its iconic Commodore and Kingswood models. While historically these vehicles were manufactured in Elizabeth, South Australia, and Fishermans Bend, Victoria, local production officially ended in October 2017. Following the end of local manufacturing, Holden products were imported from plants in Thailand, South Korea, and Germany.
In early 2020, General Motors (GM) announced the official retirement of the Holden brand name from the market. Today, the intellectual property and heritage of the brand remain under the ownership of General Motors, an American multinational corporation headquartered in Detroit. Despite the brand's retirement, GM continues to manage the legacy, parts, and service obligations for the extensive fleet of Holden vehicles remaining on the road through its GM Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) network.
