Founded in Costa Mesa, California, in 1999 by Bob Hurley, the brand was originally a licensee of Billabong before branching out independently. Its apparel, including t-shirts like the one shown, is produced across a global supply chain with manufacturing facilities in countries such as Vietnam, China, and various locations in Central America.

Ownership of the brand has transitioned through major corporate entities. After being acquired by Nike Inc. in 2002, which helped it achieve global dominance in the action sports market, it was sold to Bluestar Alliance LLC in late 2019. Bluestar Alliance, a brand management firm, now oversees its global licensing and strategic growth.
