The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole combat aircraft. It is designed to perform ground-attack and air-superiority missions. The F-35 program, known as the Joint Strike Fighter program, is one of the most significant and complex military aerospace projects in history.
While the primary manufacturing and final assembly take place in the United States, specifically at Lockheed Martin's Fort Worth facility, the F-35 is a global endeavor. Major components are produced across a vast international supply chain including the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Denmark, and Norway. Final Assembly and Check-Out (FACO) facilities also exist in Italy and Japan for specific regional requirements.
Lockheed Martin, the lead contractor, is an American aerospace, arms, defense, information security, and technology corporation. The development of the F-35 incorporates technologies from several major partners, including Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems, and the aircraft remains under the ultimate ownership and corporate management of Lockheed Martin, headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland.
