Founded in 1982 by Tim Waterstone, Waterstones has grown to become the United Kingdom's leading high street bookseller. The brand's origin is rooted in its first location at Old Brompton Road, London, which set a new standard for book retail by employing highly literate staff and stocking an extensive range of titles. Over the decades, it expanded through organic growth and the acquisition of other notable chains like Dillons and Ottakar's.

While Waterstones is primarily a service and retail brand, its physical products—such as exclusive editions, stationery, and gift items—are sourced globally, though the retail experience is quintessentially British. The company has navigated several ownership changes, reflecting the evolving landscape of global private equity and corporate investment.

In 2018, the majority stake in the company was acquired by Elliott Advisors, an American investment firm. Under this ownership, Waterstones has also integrated with Blackwell’s and Wordery, further solidifying its position in the literary market. Today, it remains headquartered in London, operating hundreds of stores across the UK and keeping the tradition of the high-street bookshop alive in the digital age.
