It was originally created in the town of Paeroa by mixing local mineral water with lemon juice, resulting in a refreshing beverage that has since become a national icon. The brand's famous slogan, 'World Famous in New Zealand,' reflects its deep cultural significance and domestic popularity.

While the brand was founded by local entrepreneurs using natural springs in the Hauraki district, it underwent several ownership changes as it grew. Today, the product is primarily manufactured in New Zealand, maintaining its heritage and local production roots. The manufacturing process involves a blend of carbonated water, sugar, and the distinct lemon flavoring that gives L&P its signature taste.

Currently, the brand is owned by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP), following the acquisition of Coastal Bottlers and later the Amatil group.
