Minecraft is a sandbox video game originally created by Swedish designer Markus "Notch" Persson. It was developed and published by Mojang Studios, a company he co-founded in Stockholm, Sweden. Since its initial alpha release in 2009 and full release in 2011, the game has become the best-selling video game in history, known for its block-based world-building mechanics.
In 2014, Microsoft acquired Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for $2.5 billion. Today, the brand is part of the Microsoft Gaming division. While the creative development remains primarily centered at Mojang Studios in Sweden, the game's infrastructure, distribution, and licensing are managed globally through Microsoft's expansive technology network in the United States and various international data centers.
