The brand was created in Vancouver, Canada, by Ludicorp, a company founded by Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake. Originally developed as part of an online game, the photo-sharing features proved so successful that they were spun off into the standalone Flickr platform. In 2005, Yahoo! acquired Flickr, moving its operations primarily to the United States and integrating it into the Yahoo! ecosystem for over a decade.

Current Ownership

In 2018, Flickr was acquired by SmugMug, a family-owned professional photo-sharing service based in California. This move was celebrated by the photography community as it transitioned Flickr away from a large advertising-driven corporate structure to a company specifically focused on photography services. Today, Flickr operates as a subsidiary of SmugMug, Inc., maintaining its status as a global hub for photographers.
