Billabong is a legendary name in surf culture, originating from the Gold Coast of Australia. Founded in 1973 by Gordon and Rena Merchant, the brand began on a kitchen table where the couple designed and stitched boardshorts for local surf shops. Known for its iconic wave logo and durable 'triple-stitched' boardshorts, Billabong quickly expanded from a local favorite to a global powerhouse in the action sports industry.
Over the decades, the company evolved through various ownership structures. In 2018, Billabong was acquired by Boardriders, Inc., which already oversaw rival brand Quiksilver. By 2023, the landscape shifted again when Boardriders was acquired by Authentic Brands Group (ABG), an American brand management company. Today, production is carried out across multiple countries including China, Vietnam, and India, while the brand continues to be managed as part of a massive global portfolio of lifestyle and athletic labels.
