Coles Group Limited is one of the most prominent retail entities in Australia, serving as a cornerstone of the nation’s grocery and consumer goods landscape. Established in 1914 by George Coles in Collingwood, Victoria, the brand has evolved from a single 'variety store' into a massive network of supermarkets, liquor stores, and convenience outlets. Today, private label products under the Coles brand are ubiquitous within their stores, spanning across fresh produce, pantry staples, and household cleaning supplies.
While the brand is deeply rooted in Australian heritage, its manufacturing footprint is global. Coles prioritizes Australian-grown produce and locally made goods for its fresh and dairy categories; however, for processed foods, textiles, and hardware items, the company sources from a diverse international supply chain including countries like New Zealand, China, Thailand, and Italy. This enables the company to maintain competitive pricing across its extensive 'Everyday' and 'Coles' product tiers.
Ownership of the brand has undergone significant changes in recent decades. After being acquired by the Wesfarmers conglomerate in 2007, Coles was spun off into its own independent, publicly-traded company in November 2018. As of 2024 and beyond, Coles Group remains an Australian-owned and operated entity, listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). This independent structure allows the company to focus exclusively on its retail operations and expansion within the Australasian market.
