Obsidian is a powerful, locally-first knowledge management and note-taking application designed to work with Markdown files. Founded in 2020, it has quickly risen to prominence within the productivity community due to its emphasis on data ownership, privacy, and an extensive plugin ecosystem. The software is developed by Dynalist Inc., a company based in Canada.
The brand was originally conceptualized and created by Shida Li and Erica Xu, who were also the founders of the outliner tool Dynalist. Obsidian was built during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to offer more flexible, non-linear ways of linking information, distinct from traditional hierarchical note-taking apps. Unlike many modern software platforms that rely on cloud storage, Obsidian stores data locally on the user's device, ensuring long-term accessibility and security.
As of 2024 and moving into 2026, Obsidian remains independently owned and operated by Dynalist Inc. The company has maintained a unique business model that avoids venture capital funding, opting instead for a user-supported model through 'Supporter' tiers and commercial licenses. This independence allows the founders to prioritize the product's core philosophy of local control and extensibility over rapid, data-monetized expansion.
